Mapping: Systematic geological mapping has so far covered 58% of the total area of 22,327 sq. km. of Manipur and 42% still remains uncover.
Mineral Exploration: Explorations are mainly concentrated on limestones, chromite, idocrase, serpentinite, sand and clay, out of which, only limestone exploration could be taken up.
- Limestone: Exploration at Phungyar has been completed and a reserve of 6.35 million tonnes (inferred) and 2 million tonnes (probable) of cement grade limestones has been estimated for Phungyar limestone. Exploration at Meiring limestone is under progress. Inferred reserve of 5.76 milliontonnes has been estimated. Probable estimated is to be taken up after drilling (total inferred reserve is 6.35+5.76=12.11 M.T.). Making of approach road from Meiring village to Meiring limestone deposit (about 4 km) has been completed.
- Chromite: 28 locations have so far been identified besides the area granted for mining lease. A reserve of 0.28 M.T. (inferred) has been estimated. Works on chromite could not be taken up further due to financial constraints.
